Play
To begin play, both players shuffle their play decks and allow them to be cut by the opposing player. Then each player looks at their bottom card. The player’s card that would appear first in the alphabet will go first. This person is Player 1.
At this point, the Director needs to be selected. Shuffle together the director cards from both players and draw 3. Lay them face up along the side of the playing area. To fence successfully, you must “fence the Director” if you want to score a touché. The remaining Director cards are set aside, in case a new director must be drawn.
Each player must set forth at least 3 weapon cards at the beginning of play. This is the weapon pool. If you have no working weapons, you will forfeit the bout and lose. Fair warning. Guard them well.
Then each player draws 7 cards.
Player 1 then may begin play by laying a Basic Move, Action, or Relic (if applicable; some cards can only be played after your opponent has done something). Once Player 1 lays a card, provided it is not a Relic, Player 2 may then try to prevent the card from working by laying a card in their Play Pile. This can include any Basic Move, Action, or Dirty Trick card from their hand. Remember, Relics can only be played on your turn.
Example:
Player 1: Bout Committee
Or
Player 1: Lunge
Player 2: Parry
Or
Player 1: Lunge
Player 2: Hit Director
Player 1 may then try to prevent Player 2’s card from working by laying another card. This exchange continues back and forth until neither player can or desires to lay a card.
Example:
Player 1: Lunge
Player 2: Parry
Player 1: *nothing*
Player 2: Riposte
Player 1: Hit Director
Player 2: Miss
Player 1: Swearing
Player 2: Director didn’t hear
Player 1: Swearing
At this point, Player 2 has nothing to play. He receives a Yellow carding offense for Swearing on the strip. No points are awarded. End of turn. At this time, move all cards in the Play Pile to the Discard Pile – do not include Relics or weapons unless they were used or broken during the turn. This just keeps things clean.
Once a turn is ended, both players draw up to 7 cards in their hand and it is now Player 2’s turn.
Discarding: Sometimes you just have crap in your hand. If that’s the case, you may spend your turn discarding 0-4 cards and drawing that many new ones from the draw pile. Your opponent may not play any cards against you if you choose to discard cards.
End game: The bout ends when one player scores 5 touches, regardless of how they have done so. The bout also ends when one player runs out of cards in their draw pile. They have “run to time.” At this point, the player with the most points wins; however that player does not receive 5 points (in case of a tournament setting). If the bout runs to time and the game is tied there are multiple possible endings.
1.The player that has the Priority Relic in play when time is called wins,
2.The game ends as a draw, or
3.Sudden death! Reshuffle your decks, as if you were starting a new game. The first person to receive a point wins.
