Carding Offenses

Solid-colored cards are not your friend…unless you are giving them to someone else. Carding offenses are given to fencers that have broken a rule or otherwise deviated from acceptable fencing behavior. They also offer your opponent a chance to score points. To explain:

There are 3 types of carding offense cards, the Yellow card, the Red card, and the Black card. The type of carding offense is shown at the top of the card with a Y, a R, or a B. Yellow cards are for minor misdemeanors or warnings. Red cards indicate a serious breach in proper fencing behavior. Black cards are reserved for the worst of the worst and will end a bout. You don’t want any of these and here’s why.

You can earn up to 2 Yellow cards with no ill effects. However, any Yellow cards you would earn after your second becomes a Red card. For each Red card you earn, your opponent gets a point. If a player receives a Red card first, there is no going back to Yellow – you’re stuck in the Red. Best not to get carded anymore. Black cards mean you lose. Period. Try to avoid it.

A side note to remember though: unless it says no, even if you get a card you still get the touché for hitting your opponent (if the situation is applicable).
